‘Wewaga’ is a new single released on 22nd July by Uganda rapper Sylvester Kabombo. A calculated diss record, the song does not necessarily try to win through loud aggression; instead, it attempts to undermine the opponent intellectually. The rapper uses Luganda subtle punchlines in a cocktail of English bars to confront his opponent without necessarily naming them.
The artist essentially tells his critic to take it easy. He satirises their supposed strength, suggesting that behind their confidence lies weakness of mindset and a lack of knowledge.
There is a sense that the rapper has ignored this opponent for a long time, but has reached a point where silence is no longer an option which makes Wewaga sound like more than a warning shot.
The video, directed by The Grit, is particularly interesting. The two opposing groups facing each other visually represent the conflict within the song. The physical act of the groups pulling at each other’s collars and shirts adds tension, suggesting a clash of ideas or egos. The audio was produced by Pro Knowledge & Titan Mukasa.
